TARRYTOWN, N.Y. – Small Business Saturday was just business as usual for Wendy Goldman, owner of Bella's Boutique in Tarrytown.

Many shoppers came to the North Broadway store and other small businesses as part of a movement to support local economies.

“We appreciate what American Express has done because it is hard to compete with malls and the big retailers, but we're doing what we do every day to support the local community,” she said.

Residents and businesses in Tarrytown, Sleepy Hollow and Irvington celebrated the third annual Small Business Saturday on Saturday. The day is preceded by Black Friday and followed by Cyber Monday. The idea, first used as a promotion by American Express, is to support small businesses during one of the busiest shopping weekends of the year.

Goldman reported the shop had seen “a decent day” on Saturday because of the shopping movement.

Anna Cangiano, owner of Au Naturel Health and Beauty in Tarrytown, participated in Small Business Saturday by offering a deal with American Express cardholders, but otherwise she said there wasn't a drastic change in customers.

“I think the weather is more compelling than Small Business Saturday,” she said.

Cangiano, however, stressed residents should support their local businesses every day.

“I think it's important to shop local,” she said. “We work very hard to bring to the community products that we know are good and make it easy for them to get them locally. It's nice to have the support.”
