Mount Kisco Adds Free Parking On Thursdays For Key Downtown Lot

MOUNT KISCO, N.Y. -- In an effort to attract more people to downtown Mount Kisco and its stores, the Shopper's Park lot will have free parking on Thursdays.

Village Manager Ed Brancati, who announced the change on Monday, said he was making the change in response to a suggestion from Mayor Michael Cindrich.

The measure begins on Thursday, Feb. 16 and will continue indefinitely, according to Brancati.

Mount Kisco's village manager has the legal authority to promulgate parking regulations, which means that doing so does not require approval from the village board.

Brancati announced the measure during Monday's board meeting.

"This is huge,” Village Trustee Jean Farber replied, noting the importance of informing the public about the change.

Shopper's Park is a major downtown parking lot, as it provides off-street spaces behind the South Moger Avenue retail corridor. it is bound to the west by storefronts and to the west by the Branch Brook.

While parking will be free on Thursdays, Brancati explained that time limits, which vary from 2-hour spots to 4-hour spots, will still be in force. The measure is similar to how Mount Kisco runs free parking during the holiday season, with people who stay beyond the limits still be subject to ticketing.

Mount Kisco's parking limits, along with metered rates, are typically in effect from Mondays to Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Parking is already free and without any restrictions on Sundays and after hours during the rest of the week.

Downtown Mount Kisco has been experiencing a chronic bout with vacancies since the late 2000s recession. Since early 2016, South Moger Avenue alone has lost retailers including Cosi, Sleepy's, Churchill's, Wilson & Son Jewelers, Ann Taylor and the Terra Rustica restaurant. Meanwhile, some South Moger vacancies have recently been filled, with newcomers including Siegel Bros' food and wine shops, and a T-Mobile store for cell phones.
