Perry, owner of Automotive Elegance for the last 24 years, said the winter is usually slower for car washes, but that this is the worst in a while. He said business peaks in the spring and after Memorial Day.
"When the cold subsides, Im sure the car wash business will be back in business, he said. This is the worst January Ive had in at least 10 years."
However, Peter Ponga, who manages Star Auto Spa in Yonkers, said his weekends are busy as car owners try to keep up with the weather. He said a good wax job before the winter helps.
"It's not easy to wash cars at home when it's very cold and we do a thorough job inside and out," Ponga said. "We get a lull when it's snowing, but you have to get that salt off your car, so we're busy."
Dennis Robertson, of Yonkers, brought his car into Star Auto Spa following the first snow storm of the week.
"I needed an oil change, so I had the car washed while i was here," Robertson said. "Keeping the outside of a car clean during the winter is not easy. I'm sure it will be dirty as soon as it's on the road with all the salt and snow."
Sean O'Reilly, co-owner of Rivertowns Taxi in Hastings said his drivers struggle to keep their cars exteriors clean during the winter months.
"We try to clean the cars inside and out once a week, if not twice," O'Reilly said. "When you have three snow events in a single week it's hard to get them done with the constant salt."
