ARMONK, N.Y. -- Armonk's downtown could be the latest in Northern Westchester to sport local community banners.

Representatives of the Armonk Chamber of Commerce spoke to the North Castle Town Board on Wednesday about the idea, which calls for installing a series of banners that say "Shop Local" in the downtown area.

Michael Levy, owner of Grand Lux Realty and a chamber board member, displayed a paper mock-up of a banner, which has blue text and a black background.

Levy noted the similarity to what is done for the Armonk Art Show. He also touched on neighboring communities that have local banners displayed, such as Chappaqua and Mount Kisco.

Levy discussed how the banners can be installed, removed and put back up.

“They can stay up, they can come down - no problem."

Levy also was open to having the chamber pay for the maintenance work.

Town Board members expressed a general interest in the concept.

“I think it’s a great idea,” said Supervisor Michael Schiliro.

Outstanding items include checking with the police chief and Highway Department, along with making sure the coloring scheme is coordinated with new hamlet signs that are planned.

The town's Architectural Review Board has already given its approval, Levy said.
